My guess is that Air Canada will counter this bid with some fresh money from Star Aliance partners.

I doubt it. There was no fresh money in the previous AC offer, and one can only assume that they tried.

If they were unable to secure new funds last time, how would they secure any this time?

Reportedly Onex met with AC's largest stock holders and they expressed their support for an improved Onex bid over AC...
