WP and the lot of them CHOSE to align with the OS/2 platform because they CHOSE to attempt to kill MSFT. I agree that both WP and Lotus made fatal strategic mistakes back then, but there's an extra complication in the history since OS/2 (a joint MS-IBM system) was heavily promoted by Microsoft at the time. It wasn't so much that they aligned with IBM against Microsoft, but that they aligned with non-GUI interface against Microsoft and Apple. They failed to recognize the power inherent in such an interface and failed to follow Microsoft in anticipating wide acceptance of the Xerox/Apple way of interacting with a computer.
