I took a moment's pause at calling her a "heinous quasi-human being" despite her (ahem) difficulties with reality as you and I may recognize it. The Little Foxes, Watch on the Rhine, Toys in the Attic secure for me respect for the gift she had as a human being, much as I deplore her rather bizarre views of her personal position in people's lives and who they were. I don't think that she would have recognized day-to-day reality in her own life if it had walked up and had shaken hands with her--not even her relationship with Hammett. However, she did see a reality in those plays that qualifies her as human, a reality that was worth seeing and pondering.
