Aside: The high school in Finland recently had to outlaw cell phones in the classroom because students were sending each other SMS messages with the answers to test questions. Which raises the question, if we act collectively, and one knows the answer and can share, isn't that as valid as if all had to learn the same fact by rote? And if so, could this be part of the vision of the state of humanity that Carver Mead discussed in his brilliant presentation at Telecosm '99 where he concluded that the evolution of man has been irrevocably and basically altered. In that for the last 1,000 generations our evolution was controlled by erratic DNA modification, but that today, via the means of the intellectual tools we have created, mankind is for the first time ever consciously controlling evolution? Is that profound or is that crackpot? You be the judge...... In my judgement, Carver has got a clue.
