Back before windows, there were many operating systems on
many kinds of computers, ranging from small machines like
DEC's PDP8 to main frames. Each company's main frame had
a different operating system. Minicomputers had various
operating systems. If you were trained on System X and you
applied for a job which was a system Y shop, you didn't have
any chance of getting the job. It was a tower of Babel.
People spent so much time learning new operating systems! Now a generation has grown up using windows. "Everybody" uses MSFT's operating system. The tower of Babel is finished. It's like English. It's an illogical language; spelling and pronunciation are not connected. Its grammar is so complicated that only about 50% of English speakers can speak it correctly. Nonetheless it works; it's the global language now. If you want to be a scientist you have to be able to think in English. Same for Windows. I personally admire Windows no more than I do English. I'd prefer, respectively Unix and Chinese, both allowing the user more flexibility and both are easier to learn the insides of. But a standard has been established. Everybody has been "trained on" Windows. Your post does not address that issue. I'm not an owner of MSFT but I think Gates is a hero. His company did more to make computing universal than any other. If the incredible political attack by MSFT's enemies succeeds, and the company is split into parts AND there is a big drop in price, I think that the resulting parts should be gorillas.
