Yaccov,

I think you are quite correct. This Chechnyan War is
political. I don't know about the dire consequences
you predict if the Russians fail to take back Chechnya.
I have read many, many books on Russian history. Hell,
I even studied Russian film when I was in college but
still their political system remains an enigma to me.

As for the mini Russian nuclear nations that might come
of a breakup of Russia, we have been down that road
already. After the the breakup of the Soviet Union,
there were actually 2 nuclear republics, the Ukraine,
and Kasakstan. If the reports of the KGB are to be
true, the Ukranian weapons were all removed and the
nuclear weapons of Kasakstan were mostly removed with
the exception of a few nuclear shells (howlitzer rounds
with nuclear payload) that are believed to have been
smuggled to Iran. It was also believed that six tactical
nuclear weapons in suitcases were "lost" somewhere and
the location of these highly portable weapons remains
unknown to this day.
