They can't retain earnings

William, a REIT gets special tax status in return for a promise to pay out 95% of profits as dividends. What they are telling you is that expenses have gone up or profits have gone down, so 95% of expected earnings will represent a smaller nominal amount than the current payout.

Even in the worst case scenario, a 50% reduction in dividend still works out to a 12% yield. I doubt the surgery will be that radical, I could live with it.
