>>>I have Quicken print out a capital gains report (which lists each trade, my basis, my profit, commissions, etc.). I then attach that to the return and enter the totals on the form as one trade and in the blank for the name of the security, I put "various-- see attached list".

Thank you, Matthew. Something roughly like this is what I had in mind for end of year. However the attached vehicle might be either improving my own slightly frankenstein spreadsheet format (which does nothing but record trades & the profit or loss on each one - I do include the commissions on the sell side, but hadn't even bothered with the SEC fees) or getting a software equivalent (if one exists) that puts the information into acceptable form for the IRS.

What's confusing me with Quicken (just went to their site) is that this appears to be tax preparation software. What I'm looking for is just that one thing - something to organize a long list of trades, so it's clearer to me & clear to the IRS & can be attached etc.

However, you say

>>> As I place a trade, I enter the trade in Quicken

So maybe Quicken would serve...It's just the thought of dealing with all the tax aspects of the software to get to whatever it is that I need! Or maybe this is another form of Quicken?

Sorry, accounting is not my strong point.

d.
