You seem to assume that the alternative to Softie is diversity.
Maybe, As I said I can't hope to say how the present would be different if some part of the past were different. I have attempted to work with Microsoft since 1977 when I quit my job and started a software company to produce programs for the Commodore PET. I spent more going to Comdex (and didn't even rent a booth, just attended and tried to get attention) than I made in the whole project. Everyone was very helpful except Microsoft (who wrote the BASIC ROMs) and I ended up having to reverse engineer the whole thing (I bet I know a lot more about Gates' programming style than most people).

Anyway, maybe it's just wishfull thinking on my part. I personally would have preferred an IBM solution, with 18 feet of manuals detailing everything you wanted and didn't want to know about the OS, than the we will tell you what we want you to know attitude I have found Microsoft to have. I know it drove me out of the considering a software business again.
