Valueman, Jay, this story would not have been complete without at least qualifying those two media types, namely, fiber and wireless, and you both did an excellent job in putting them into perspective.
I agree with you Jay, hollow conduit or pipe, or "cold fiber" as some tradespeople call it, with a drag line installed (a.k.a. the "string" you referenced for pulling new cabling through the pipe when it's time) is still the best form of fiber in the residence at this time.
Even if you wanted to pre-fiber the house in preparation for when it's time for whomever to pull fiber to your home, you wouldn't know what grade and technical specification to order at this time, anyway. Best to wait, like you say. But you might be surprised to know just how many folks (and housing developments) have done just the opposite.. pulled fiber in advance that is, as part of a complete set of future-proofing provisions when laying out new homes.
Even more ironic is that this "trend," if you can call one in thousands <?> a trend, started about five or six years ago in earnest, and has tapered off to zip, as time went by. I've come across such accounts during years of posting and reading others' experiences on the Compuserve Telecomms Forum, among other sources.
You're absolutely right, though, about waiting until it's soup. Unless, of course, you have a full-blown trading operation based in your den, and you are supplying live ticker feeds, analytics and financial modeling over Gigabit Ethernet to your neighbors down the road. Nah.. they only do that in the residential flats of Silicon Alley.
