Donna, I lurked (lurqed, lurqer? hung out?) on the SUNW thread tonight and it was very interesting. The MSFT thread is in such shock it's hard to evaluate. The SUNW thread is crowing a bit, but not completely. They're concerned too, as I am, about the ramifications. Not short-term impact on MSFT (that's my own concern since I'm still long Softee), but the impact on the tech industry as a whole. As one person posted, there:

I think the "remedies" will amount to more regulation which won't just apply to Msft but the entire industry. If the regulation is too much it could mire down the large players in the tech sector (including Sun). As an example, giving away Star Office for free could be considered predatory pricing (to Applix and Corel) - a company which is in one business sector "dumps" product into another business sector to spur sales in effect hurting a business in the "dumped" sector.

Others agreed. This is my concern in terms of how we see other gorillas and how they operate in the future. I know opinions are deeply divided about MSFT as a company.

And here's an amusing post from the MSFT thread:

You Americans are simply too rich !!! As a European I am completely stunned how you start to kill the company that made your country the most powerful force in the most important industry of the future which is computers, software and information technology. It looks like you can afford to stop the motor of that is behind the fastest growing segments of your economy, the motor that is responsible for the full employment in your country and the motor that ultimatively is responsible for your budget surplus. There is only one explanation for a nation that can afford so much foolishness in my eyes: You all must be too rich !!! Yes, only a nation of golf players can make such a decision ! In Europe they unemployed masses would lynch the government that makes such a decision. Well, I must say I am not too unhappy about this American stupidity because it opens the door for the European LINUX-OS of our Linus Thorwald "Thor's Hammer" even wider !! Forget Bill Gates he will soon be history thanks to a collective effort of the American People represented by the DOJ !! Who would have thought of this help.... crazy world...
