HI Lee, The reason is that the transactions must be registrated, for reasons of being able to pay dividend, splits and such.
In case one really has a lot of transactions one could register as a broker, and buy access to the tradesystems, thus being ones own broker, even being a broker for others. Some details can be found in www.nasdaq.com

I know of one on-line brokerhouse, that allow the users to trade without going into the open b/A market - That is WIT-Capital in NYC. - In that case WIT do the service of entering the change of ownership, for a fee. Info is somewhere in www.witcapital.com
