Tensions between China and the United States threaten
to grow because of Washington's foreign policy and the
isolationist tendencies of the US Congress, French
President Jacques Chirac has warned.

Mr Chirac denounced what he called a tendency
towards isolationism and unilateralism in Congress.

The foundations were already in place "for what could,
one day, become a new tension" between the US and
China, he said.

"We will only escape this serious risk by initiating a
balanced dialogue between the regional poles. It is in
everyone's interest," Mr Chirac said.
