To Mardy and the thread - Excellent research, as usual, Mardy. Have been corresponding with a number of people about the latest developments on the Wi-LAN front. Looking at the various aspects of Wi-LAN's business plan, its stance on IPRs, the potential impact of the Cisco/Clarity VOFDM initiative, ditto the ITU MCDSSS issue, the amount of research required is huge. Separating the various issues is another problem. Without going into the incomplete research, I'll lay this out as a general proposition: regardless of how these immediate IPR problems play out, Wi-LAN is going to make a pile of money. Again, I'll state the nub of the problem: despite the flood of information, at its heart this is a very secretive business, with huge amounts of cash involved. There are non-disclosure agreements, and the threat of legal action if the wrong things are made public. Consequently, we are not getting the whole story, and we have to join the dots with incomplete information, inferences, and extrapolation. However, some of us began posting on this forum because we wanted the hard answers to the hard questions - sorry, Hatim! - so we could properly evaluate our investments. I have been concerned about the impact of these IPR issues, and I'm not sure that Wi-LAN will assert the dominance it believes it has on patents... but that's a whole different game; sometimes, you're really rolling the dice on these issues - the result can be completely unforseen. The decision of the courts can be just plain wrong. Look at the IDC/Motorola litigation here:

I haven't seen anything yet that dissuades me from my investment in Wi-LAN; on the contrary, I still believe this stock will make large gains. Competition? Yes. But we all (should have) expected that. But nobody needs a hypster; the good and the bad will be posted. And remember too, that much of what we're discussing won't be in the hands of consumers, in a big way, for 2-3 years. Finally, on the ITU/MCDSSS application by Wi-LAN, a liitle background info, and perhaps a little understanding:
