May be the these folks (VHP/BD/Sainiks etc) should go set up schools and medical dispensaries for them, build them places of worship and comfort them spiritually, make them politically aware, teach them their rights and make them see they areNOT being exploited etc instead of just sitting around whining about it and crying foul.
I agree with you and you have shown insight in to this problem. What is the Govt doing? The Govt is expected to provide healthcare, education and equal treatment under law and the community is expected to provide the places of worship, equal treatment etc. Not enough is being done. I recently read that Indian Govt has done quite a bit on its part by favoring the underprivileged, the downtrodden in College admissions, Govt jobs etc in an attempt correct the past inequities. It is a continuous ongoing process. This preferential treatment accorded to the Dalits and the other oppressed classes is showing in the caste spectrum and makeup of parliament members. That is a good thing. 20 years ago there were less members of the oppressed community becoming MPs Now there are more. Let me give you an example, In the 1950s, when I went to college, I saw several muslim and the oppressed class students were getting scholarship aid from the Govt, while many upper caste students though deserving, didn't get it. But more need to be done to the oppressed. Remember that in America, civil rights came in to being only in the 1960s. Indian Govt initiated the preferential treatment of the oppressed classes in the late 40s and 50s. |
