DWDM Market
11/4/99 At present, Ciena Corp. (Linthicum, MD) seems to be in the best
position of all the manufacturers to take advantage of the U.S. public ILEC/IXC
metro DWDM market, according to Trans-Formation projections. However, the
terribly slow movement toward this technology by such customers, especially the
RBOCs, may allow other suppliers to take over a leadership position.
The U.S. ILEC/IXC metro DWDM market will only grow from about $85 million in
2000 to about $415 million in 2004, says Trans-Formation.
Ciena's advantages include the following:
perceived as a leader in metro DWDM
focused solely on optical networking and does not cross-compete other
solutions such as SONET or optical fiber
solid track record with metro DWDM deployment
large enough in size to ensure adequate manufacturing production
ability to offer a full turnkey system and network implementation.
This last advantage can be very important with even large IXCs in cases where
engineers are pre-occupied with construction of their long-haul networks.
Moreover, by combining the customer's staff with experience on local operations
along with Ciena's implementation arm in Atlanta, the learning curve at the carrier
with metro DWDM deployment can be shortened.
