John,

ALL PC operating systems should be in the public domain.
The PC has always been non-proprietary hardware, so
the operating system software should reflect that.
This would eliminate any problems MSFT has in the
commercial marketplace. They could still make money
selling applications, without the problems of product
tying, predatory pricing practices etal... General
product quality for all PC users would improve as well.
