Hope you don't mind if I jump in. Have not been particularly active of late so my turn.

I bought into JDSU via the Cdn side of JDS Fitel a couple of years ago - so I'm not complaining. I believe the thread consensus currently is that JDSU is a King vice Gorilla. That said, I think a lot of thread members while more comfortable with Gorillas recognize that King's can be extremely profitable. We just need to pay a little bit more attention given the lack of a long term "lock".

That said, I think JDSU is particularly attractive LONG TERM simply due to its target market. The underlying demand fuelling the internet is overwhelming. It's not going to slow down in the forseeable future, particularly with higher bandwidth demands coming on line. I believe that the overwhelming strength underlying this target market provides quite a cushion for the company. While the price has gone crazy of late, and is likely overdue for a decent correction, a horizon beyond the short term is very attractive.
The company has an excellent balance sheet. The UNPH/JDS merger has been executed particularly well. Leadership at the CEO/COO level seems strong and quite complementary. They are capacity constrained, not demand constrained, however now they have the stock currency to go out and get the additional pieces they need to keep ahead of the competition. The competition (primarily ETEK, SDLI) is good, but not as powerful (imo). Growth rate going forward is on the order of 80-98% (company guidance). While the momo players make the stock more risky short term, I still believe its an excellent longer term buy and hold candidate, even w/o Gorilla protection. Given the limited supply of human talent in this industry, going with the clear leader in a market growing this fast still has excellent potential over the next few years.

Sorry if this is rambling - but hope that it helps get you started on what I believe is one of the most attractive investments out there, even w/o official gorilla status.

cheers
