Dear Jack:

You are right in pointing out that two-way digital MMDS
cannot compete with QCOM because it cannot handle mobile
access, but I also think that 3G will not be able to offer
the data rates of MMDS. Wireless-wonk gave you most
of the reasons. Mobile operators will operate out of
spectrum slices of about 15 to 25MHz. MMDS has
more than 100MHz. Also, the fixed wireless configuration
allows higher order QAM modulation and a finer
sectorization. So, I see the two services coexisting
very well. In essence, it depends on the data rates
needed by users. For relatively modest rates, mobile
wireless will do, for higher rates MMDS will come in,
and for true broadband access, LMDS will be needed.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
