.CHK files ...

When your disk gets cleaned-up with a utility such as CHKDSK, lost clusters get gathered together and made into files. If your system had 36meg of lost clusters, you now have 36meg of new files with .CHK extension. (Usually FILE0000.CHK, FILE0001.CHK ...)

If they were on my system, I'd just delete them. You may want to act more prudently and compress them so you could keep them around long enough to know your system's working OK without them before you delete them.

I've very rarely ever been able to use a .CHK file for anything useful.
