Wasn't "Valis" and what he wrote following that inspired by what he described as a "visit" of some sort? My understanding is he claims that a bright light appeared in his room and sent him messages somehow. It seems that after he disclosed that to the reading public, he went from being a pretty fair sci-fi writer to some kind of cult figure.
