Hi PB - regarding Coppermine availability

I'm trying to figure out what could be happening. We have heard of the "copy exactly" system used by Intel, while the AMD process is more ad hoc (I'll assume). AMD seems to have made a gradual transition from .25 to .18 for Athlon production at Austin without affecting output too much (so far at least).

Can it be that we are seeing a temporary effect of the 4 FABs shutting down .25 production, changing the equipment, then starting up .18 production? Could this (seeming) dip in Pentium III availability be partly due to an unusually large simultaneous "copy" going on at more FABs than are usually transitioned at once?

My back of the envelope calculation shows that the 4 FABs should be able to process something like 5 million die per week (guessing the 4 Intel FABs are about the same size as the 2 AMD FABSs), (5K wafers * 250 die * 4 FABs) so even if the initial yields aren't great, there should still be a flood of chips available. Is it just a matter of mass production not having started until about the time of the announcement (due to time needed for "copy exactly") and so we'll see volume about a month from now? Or has Intel just been sitting on Inventory until Comdex?

If I'm way off base, please let me know.
