I agree. A playoff is a must. Polls are based on subjective rankings, which are affected by biases. I think an 8-team playoff would be enough. Usually there aren't any 2-loss teams in the top 8 at the end of the season. Since the overall winner and runner-up would play 3 games in the playoff, maybe the length of the regular season could be shortened by a game or two (get rid of an OOC game).

The way it works now, teams are rewarded too much for losing early and hurt too much for losing late. What if Florida wins over FSU - don't they deserve to be ranked ahead of UT? They won't be. Same with PSU. Nebraska is ranked ahead of them only because they lost earlier. The bowls are a lot of fun but controversy occurs way too often. GT split the national title with Colorado, Washington split with Miami, PSU didn't even split in 1994, Nebraska split with Michigan, and on and on. These teams should be playing each other. Even when there is no split, it appears subjectively to me that sometimes the first place team is weaker than the 3rd or 4th place team, which happened to lose later in the season.

The BCS is better than the previous system only when the top 2 teams are clearly better than the rest. That rarely occurs. There've been about 5 FSU teams in the last 12-13 years that lost early in the season and therefore weren't allowed to play for the national title, but at the end of the season were playing better than anyone. The BCS would make no difference in this situation. A playoff is the only way to solve the problem.
