Dell Computer To Open Second Tennessee Plant

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP, news, msgs)--Three months after opening its first U.S. manufacturing plant outside of Texas, Dell Computer Corp. (DELL, news, msgs) on Monday announced plans to open a second plant in Tennessee.
Chairman and Chief Executive Michael Dell said a growing consumer market is driving the latest expansion.
"Our consumer business is growing at roughly 100% per year in unit terms, so we need a lot of capacity to support that growth," Dell said.
Dell, Round Rock, Texas, is the nation's No. 1 personal computer maker and the world's biggest direct-seller of PCs. The company is the world's No. 2 PC maker behind Compaq.
Like the Lebanon, Tenn., plant, which opened in August, the Nashville operation will assemble Dell's Dimension desktop PC line.
Plans are to break ground in the next few weeks on the Nashville plant, which should be operational by mid-2000. The plant will go beside two Dell office buildings already under construction near the Nashville International Airport.
The new plant will employ 650 people.
