Clark,

EEPROM = Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory

A non-volatile device (chip) used to store data. Non-volatile in the sense that the data is not lost in the absence of power. Title is misleading - Device is written to (thus not read-only) and erased elctrically. Difference to RAM - random access memory - 1) speed of read/write, 2) Number of times unit may be written to (perhaps more of an issue with Flash memory).

Serial EEPROM differs from EEPROM only in the manner in which data is written and stored to the device. Serial EEPROM - a serial stream of data ( a bit at a time). EEPROM - a parallel stream of data (in bytes - one byte = eight bits).
