Telia introduces broadband Wireless Internet Access
Today Telia?s subsidiary for Wireless Data Communication, Telia GlobalCast AB, introduced its wireless broadband net. Telia GlobalCast AB is first in the world to offer Wireless Internet Access with a net transmission rate at up to 25 Mbit/s. The wireless broadband net is an important component in Telia?s broadband strategy. The technology is a complement to today?s mobile network and can be used for all kinds of digital communication. The high transmission rate enables various user applications over the network, including Internet-and Intranet access, and audio- and videocasting.
?To complete our other communication services we have chosen to concentrate on the wireless broadband net,? says Jan-ke Kark, chairman of Telia. ?With this technology we are years ahead of our competitors and we will be able to establish our company at the international market rapidly.?
The GlobalCast wireless network is currently available in three Swedish cities: Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malm”. It is easy to extend the net and Telia GlobalCast is planning a rapid growth. The extension in other parts of the country has already been started and next summer whole of Sweden will be covered. At the end of next year the bigger cities in Norway, Denmark and Finland will be covered. To make this possible Telia GlobalCast cooperates with the companies Wi.LAN Inc. and Amplify.net Inc.
Telia GlobalCast offers three wireless Internet access services: Budget, Business and Pro, to business customers. It is easy to subscribe and the customers get full Internet access within 48 hours.
?The only thing needed is an antenna at the customer site with an unobstructed line of sight to one of our radio nodes. Telia GlobalCast services are also ideal for dense populated areas where the concentration of apartment or business houses easily could be covered by a single GlobalCast radio node, says Hans O. Johansson, president of Telia GlobalCast. Businesses working with large applications, such as web companies, media companies and production companies, will benefit from the subscription?.
The wireless communication is based on a central located NOC (Network Operating Center) with Internet access and high speed connections to net nodes, that can be connected to customers or be used to establish new links. The equipment is intended for installation the customer site, in rates from 256 Kbit/ s to 25 Mbit/s.
?We provide the customer with an antenna, radio bridge and a router. We also wire twisted pair cables to the customer?s network. In some cases we apply for IP-addresses. To accomplish noise free communication with the radio node we install a satellite dish at the customer. When we have inspected and measured the customer site and received the landlordïs permission to place an antenna on the roof, the customer will have access to the wireless net within 48 hours,? says Hans O.
