HDR Hype

I am glad you all enjoyed the hype about HDR put out by QCOM today. I think it should be mentioned that HDR is just a knee-jerk reaction to MCOM/WCOM's Ricochet 2 network which will be rolled out next year. Ricochet 2 is a high speed wireless internet service that offers between 128kbps and 180kbps sustained data rate to mobile users. It is being deployed by MCOM with the help of a $600 million investment by WCOM and Paul Allen's Vulcan Ventures.

The facts are as follows:

By Jacobs's own admission, HDR's sustained rate will be about 100kbps typicaly. The earliest possible date it go into service would be Q2 2001. It reqires purchase of additional channel spectrum so that it does not interfere with voice traffic. By the time it is available, G3 will be just around the corner so there will not be too many service providers who will want to invest in a new communications system twice in three years. While the downlink speed is acceptable, the uplink speed is much slower due to the low power put out by battery powered radios in portable devices. There did not seem to be much provision for handling high bandwidth requirements in certain areas. Although QCOM made an argument for a $40 flat rate pricing structure, they have no control over what their carriers charge for the service. QCOM has not even started field testing or market testing. Market testing will have to wait for the first batch of chips due out Q4 2000. By then, MCOM will already be marketing its flat rate wireless internet in 14-20 of the nation's largest markets. By the earliest date that HDR can be rolled out, MCOM will already have service covering over 100 million potential customers.

Jacobs was right about wireless internet taking off in 2001. Unfortunately, it will be MCOM at the controls, not QCOM. Check out MCOM's news release today:
