DJ Qualcomm Unveils New Wireless Technology

SAN DIEGO (Dow Jones)--Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) unveiled a line of High Data Rate, or HDR, chipsets and software systems, which are designed to increase the transmission speed for wireless data communications.

In a press release Monday, Qualcomm, which sells wireless communictions products and services, said it unveiled the iMSM4500 Mobile Station Modem system, which is due to be released in sample quantities in the fourth quarter of 2000, with production quantities scheduled for the first quarter of 2001.

The next generation of HDR chipsets, called the iMSM5500, is due to be released in sample quantities in the second quarter of 2001, with production quantities scheduled for the third quarter of 20001.

In a separate release on Monday, Qualcomm said it demonstrated that HDR technology is compatible with code division multiple access, or CDMA technology, and can supply wireless Internet access.

The company is a hosting a symposium on HDR technology Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss the technology with wireless technology companies. Qualcomm demonstrated HDR technology on Monday to preview the symposium.
