John: Marks and Spencers alias "marks and sparks" or "M&S" is huge British success story. The leading retail chain - mainly in clothes but also strong in food and increasingly in other lines. Expanding across Europe. less successful expansion (now closed down ) in Canada expansion through acquisition of other chains in the US. The hall mark of quality, value for money and top management. An army of loyal and influential shareholders -amazing profits for decades and reputation as most advanced management. UNTIL THIS YEAR. First time in history has seen two half year reports of falling profits. Headline news in Britain. As a result it is going through a major revamp. Hiring leading fashion designers for its clothes, accepting credit cards for the first time, shifting its suppliers. I would think the COMPAQ deal is part of this radical re-vamp. Endorsement by marks and sparks is a huge plus in Britain and Europe for COMPAQ.

Personally I only buy socks from M&S but love their food - virtually lived on it for years.
