Unclewest, could you please elaborate on why the SiC laser will be such a dominant application?

The shorter wavelength of blue lasers compared with other colours (and infra-red) allows higher information storage density on, for example, recordable DVD or similar media.

The smallest spot size that light can be focussed to with a lens is directly related to the wavelength (colour) of the light source. A laser provides a very intense light from a small area, which helps with focussing. A blue laser can be focussed smaller than a red laser which can in turn be focussed to a smaller spot than an infra-red one. Conventional CDROMs use infra-red lasers.

A blue laser built from silicon carbide is likely to be more robust and powerful than one made from competing materials.
