American Power Conversion Expands Power Protection Suite For Home and Small Office Applications

WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (APC) (Nasdaq: APCC) today announced the expansion of its Back-UPS(R) family of multi-path uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) with the introduction of the Back-UPS Office(R) 400. This compact UPS, which is rated 400VA, is ideally suited for higher powered PCs in small business and home environments.

"Today's home and small business computer users demand continuous power and surge protection for all computer components and external peripherals," said Joe Loberti, general manager of APC's Consumer Network Solutions Group. "APC's Back-UPS Office 400 offers a convenient, all-in-one power protection solution for computer users operating in a variety of working environments."

According to Contingency Planning, power failures and surges cause 45.3% of data loss. A study by IBM has shown that a typical computer is subject to more than 120 power problems per month. Power interruptions or outages can cause problems including keyboard lockups, corrupted data, and lost Internet connections as well as hardware degradation and system crashes resulting in complete data loss.

APC's Back-UPS Office 400 is a multi-path solution that protects computer equipment and peripherals as well as data from power disturbances. The average runtime of the Back-UPS Office 400 is 13 - 18 minutes.

Back-UPS Office 400 features include:

* Six high-powered outlets -- Three outlets provide powerful battery

backup while all six outlets offer high performance surge protection.

Two of the six outlets offer special spacing to accept bulky transformer

blocks without covering other outlets;

* Fax/modem surge protection -- The Back-UPS Office 400, which is Internet

ready, provides fax/modem surge protection to protect against

"back-door" surges;

* Intelligent battery management -- Microprocessor-controlled intelligent

battery management minimizes the downtime of the UPS by notifying the

user when battery replacement is required;

* User replaceable batteries -- Offers a cost-effective, time-saving

solution since factory serviced battery replacement is not required;

and

* Higher operating efficiency -- New technology also enhances the

UPS's operating efficiency while on battery, which in turn increases the

unit's reliability.

APC's 120-volt Back-UPS Office 400 will be available in North America and Mexico in mid-November. The product has an estimated resale price of $99.
