From John Dvorak's on-line column:

"The battle between the two flash memory formats for digital cameras seems to be coming to a head or getting more complicated, depending on how you look at it. Sony added its proprietary memory stick to the fray, which I believe will eventually become the Betamax to Compact Flash's VHS. The odd man out may be the little Smart Media card. Agfa is abandoning Smart Media in favor of Compact Flash, and the newest offering from Olympus (the real force behind Smart Media) has two slots, one for Smart Media and the other for Compact Flash. If Olympus eventually bails out, then Smart Media will be dead."

And from his column in PC Magazine 11/2/99 (print edition)

"The huge demand for digital cameras at higher pixel resolutions has swamped the flash memory makers. According to Semico Research, the growth of flash is phenomenal, and it will be a $6 billion market by the end of next year! Manufacturing lead times are as high as 26 weeks, with most makers sold out for the rest of the year.

Semico sees a market growth pattern that looks to be doubling every 3 years. This projection may be conservative...Finally, lets not forget the potential new uses of flash memory...The way I see it, and the way things are going, this is going to become a serious long-term problem."

Note: for holders of Sandisk stock - replace the word "problem" with "opportunity"
