BELLSOUTH TELECOMMUNICATIONS SELECTS CASCADE
COMMUNICATIONS CBX 500 ATM SWITCHES

WESTFORD, MA -- April 14, 1997 -- Cascade Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:CSCC) today
announced that BellSouth Telecommunications has selected CBX 500 Asynchronous Transfer Mode
(ATM) switches to provide native ATM services to its customers and to scale its existing B-STDX 9000
Frame Relay network.

The CBX 500 distributed routing capability gives BellSouth the capacity to meet customer demands for
new ATM service offerings, said Bob Fulghum, BellSouth Fast Packet Services Product Manager.
Customers also will be able to integrate their existing Frame Relay networks with ATM.

The CBX 500 supports 224,000 simultaneous virtual circuits, has the capability to process 3,000
switched virtual circuits per second, and will provide BellSouth customers with a migration path to ATM
at central sites without the need to change existing equipment or circuits.

We are delighted that BellSouth has chosen Cascade, said Bob Machlin, Cascade Communications Corp.
Vice President, Marketing. The CBX 500 provides many benefits including end-to-end Frame Relay and
ATM connectivity and a migration path to ATM without the need to change existing equipment or
circuits.

BellSouth has made an initial purchase of 11 CBX 500 switches. In addition to providing native ATM
services, the company also will use the CBX 500 as an ATM backbone for its network of nearly 100
Cascade B-STDX 9000 Frame Relay switches. To meet increasing demands for services within its
nine-state region, BellSouth will use the CBX 500 switches in tandem with the B-STDX 9000s within the
same Local Access Transport Area (LATA). This will reduce network delays and the number of nodes
that customer traffic traverses.

Using CascadeView, BellSouth can manage the CBX 500 and Cascade B-STDX 9000 switches as a single
network from a single network management platform. This will provide the company with integrated
provisioning, troubleshooting, and reporting capabilities.
