Re: Adtran's (sym:ADTN) Wireless Access Product
Bernard, While reviewing my watch accounts I was surprised to come across this bit of news out of Adtran (old news!). I must have overlooked it in my previous DD while the stock was hovering around the 20 level and I never pulled the trigger. Ouch!
As you may recall, they are pretty much a HDSL/HDSL2 expert. They are stealing away a lot of the HDSL business from their competitors.
But I had no idea they had wireless products. Much less wireless products for the RBOC market. Here's the direct link to the product: adtran.com
And what do you make of the following announcment? Do you know in what markets Bell Atlantic would want to deploy this wireless solution? I would think their twisted copper pair is too valuable to overlay it with wireless access.
So I'm guessing it may have something to do with an FCC wish that Bell Atlantic compete outside their twisted copper pair territorities. This in return for the GTE merger to be approved. Thanks, MikeM(From Florida)

Bell Atlantic Selects ADTRAN Wireless Alternative for Last-Mile Access
Spread-Spectrum Unlicensed Microwave Radio Offers Fast and Easy Deployment Solution
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (August 16, 1999) - ADTRAN, Inc announced today a contract with Bell Atlantic to provide the industry's first NEBS Level 3 compliant dual T1, license-free radio -- ADTRAN's TRACER©. As the result of a rigorous selection process, Bell Atlantic has chosen ADTRAN for wireless unlicensed T1 connectivity for voice and data transmission. TRACER will be deployed in various applications including last-mile access where wireline options are either difficult or unavailable.
"Bell Atlantic has identified TRACER as a solution for certain last mile deployment requirements," said Tom Stanton, General Manager of ADTRAN's Carrier Networks Division. "TRACER's unique functionality and deployment costs were factors in establishing it as a viable solution, as was ADTRAN's inherent understanding of Bell Atlantic's overall requirements such as NEBS testing. Our existing relationship with Bell Atlantic enables us to provide comprehensive support for its wireless applications."
ADTRAN's TRACER uses spread spectrum microwave technology for reliable digital delivery of dual T1 capacity at up to 30 miles point-to-point. TRACER also operates license-free in the 2.4 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band, allowing immediate deployment. With a choice of rackmount or mastmount configurations that are fully compatible with legacy T1 products, installation is fast and easy. |
