Ok, I lied. I've been accumulating the stock for 1 year, own a lot of it and have had regular trips/meetings to Cree. The best place to read about the products is the intro to the annual report viewable at www.cree.com. Regarding competing materials, saphire is the only other LED material that can produce blue/white high brite LED's...Nichia is biggest supplier. Saphire has a significant disadvantage: it is not a conductor so the contacts need to both be on top making the chip larger and producing a packaging anomoly from the industry standard (red LED'S) which is set up for contacts top and bottom (again see cree website for this diagram). as a result, there is less yield from a saphire wafer resulting in greater cost...$.65+- vs $.25 -$.35 for Cree's SiC. While saphire is a bit brighter at this point, Cree will catch up there as well. Other advantages include hardness and heat resistance. Also, in Hunter's concluding remarks at AGM, he mentioned that he saw the LED market to approach $40B and LED lighting could save 5% of current energy consumption (lower heat/less energy)

As I have posted many times on Yahoo, i bought MSFT at the IPO...and have yet to be as excited by the potential of a company and industry as i am with Cree. Cree has IP protection on wafer production and devices...and as John Palmour (chief scientist) said Cree has a 5 year jump on everyone with lead expanding as evidenced by the latest showings at the SiC conference. Hunter also said that this was the most exciting time in his 12 years with Cree..the company is about to explode...6x new production with a lot of that from increased yields (read expanded margins) and with new products we have IMHO what Intel looked like in early 70's...but better in that Intel did not have IP protection on Si wafer fabrication....and then there is the intellectual resources...the top scientists working in SiC wants to work at Cree...got tired of typing...Uncle knows the story...he's up on everything...oh and i forgot...Hunter said he's sold out for 12 months...probably now 18 months...new products in power and microwave will be incremental...blue laser probably 12 months and then fugettaboutit...

Cheers!
