Lucent is just following along the path that Nortel and Cisco have been investing in heavily as well. Nortel is strong in optics. Cisco purchased Cerent in this space. Also, check out upstart Sycamore Networks. Everyone know that the high end is going optical. That's why the Juniper and Foundry valuations are ludicrous.
