France's LETI labs produces 0.02-micron MOS transistor

GRENOBLE, France -- Microelectronics researchers here at France's Laboratory for Electronics, Technology, and Instrumentation (LETI) have produced a functional 20-nanometer n-channel MOS transistor as part of an R&D project exploring the limits of MOSFET technology.

French government officials disclosed the development last week, predicting that the 20-nm transistor structure will not be commercially used for at least 15 years, based on the technology roadmap of the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association. However, the experimental 0.02-micron transistor is expected to help researcher in LETI's Ultimate CMOS project understand solid-state limits when device geometries are shrunk to down to 20 nm.

The project falls under the Plato Microelectronics of the Future program being conducted on LETI's 200-mm wafer processing line.
