Akula: <<The Bill of Rights was written at a time still influenced by a fear of federal tyranny.>>

The French have a phrase you might keep in mind: La plus ca change, la plus ca meme chose. (The more things change, the more they stay the same.)

In the early part of this century the government imprisoned and was responsible for the deaths of many union organizers, those of the IWW (Wobblies) in particular.

In the early 30s, Hoover sicced the National Guard and other Federal agencies on people peacefully protesting by camping out in Washington D.C.

In the 40s, Japanese Americans were rounded up and placed in concentration camps without due process. In the same decade our OSS (the predecessor of the CIA) had the Army conduct an experiment over San Francisco to see how effective it would be to infect a populace with pneumococcus bacteria by delivery via an airplane.

Since then, there's been the murder of war protesting students at Kent State...the murder of a woman and child at Ruby Ridge...and, what IMHO is coming to appear to be, the wholesale slaughter of children and adults at Waco.

Our current President has suggested that we suspend the fourth amendment for those unfortunate enough to live in public housing.

While I agree that armed revolt would be doomed to failure, the revocation of our right to bear arms would only be a precursor to the loss of other rights the government felt were inconvenient, IMHO. Also, there may be times when even a revolt that can't win may be a viable option to help correct the actions of a repressive government...and an armed populace makes the government think twice about what it can get away with.<g>
