Hi Dan3; Now, now, be nice! Intel is Rambus' big protector. This has been wonderful for Rambus, and also for AMD. The question is how long will this last.

The problem is that because of the recent Intel stumbles, Intel has lost a lot of the power it once had over the rest of the industry. Here's what the company that Intel gave $500MM to, in order to get them to make RDRAMs, is doing:

Micron DDR benchmarking takes case to OEMs

Micron's disclosure continues a quiet campaign waged by DRAM makers to convert PC OEM plans to DDR SDRAM and force Intel to abandon Rambus.

This is a new day dawning, and Intel is slowly discovering that they can't automatically give the marching orders to all the companies that use their chips.

You know, Intel could have pulled this off if they had done it the right way. The right way would have been to integrate the memory controller onto the CPU, and then only sell CPUs with RDRAM controllers. That might have been enough. But as long as other companies can make the memory controller, it is the other companies that will choose what memory to hook up to it.
