GDC and Encore announce collaborative agreement for joint sales and marketing efforts GDC and Encore announce collaborative agreement for joint sales and marketing efforts Monday, April 14, 1997 9:17:00 AM EDT

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 1997--General DataComm Inc. (GDC) and Encore Computer Corp. (NASDAQ SmallCap:ENCC) Monday announced an agreement for sales and marketing.

The two companies have succeeded in uniquely integrating storage with Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) wide area broadband services. As a result of their joint development efforts, GDC and Encore will offer organizations cost-effective, high-end data storage, retrieval, and data sharing technologies over unlimited distances, and at broadband communication speeds that were previously unattainable.

The collaborative efforts between the two companies should yield disaster recovery and business continuance solutions that will provide mirroring and data sharing between remote sites over T-3 or ATM broadband networks operating at OC-3C SONET speeds of 155 megabits per second (Mbps) and higher with no distance limitation. Until now, long-haul disaster recovery disk subsystems have been limited to dedicated T-1 circuits of 1.5 Mbps and T-3 circuits of 45 Mbps that require channel extenders and other expensive proprietary systems. This solution will utilize Encore's Infinity SP(tm) Universal Storage Processors and GDC's Multimedia Access Concentration (MAC) ATM switches.

In addition to joint development efforts, under the agreement the two companies have opened an Information Superhighway Showcase at Encore's headquarters to demonstrate how leading-edge technologies can be used to provide advanced applications such as disaster recovery and business continuance, telemedicine, and distance learning. GDC will also use the Information Superhighway Showcase at Encore as a demonstration and customer briefing center for its U.S. customers and for Latin American prospects.

Ross Belson, president of GDC said: "Our technologies are highly complementary. GDC's APEX switch concentrates frame relay, LAN, video, audio and voice over a single ATM link just as Encore's products consolidate storage from channel-attached mainframes, SCSI-based computer systems, and LAN-connected PCs regardless of manufacturer or operating system. We expect this synergistic relationship to deliver mission-critical services superior to anything available today."

Kenneth G. Fisher, chairman and CEO of Encore Computer Corp. said: "We are pleased to be associated with GDC and their various network switching technologies. Encore's scalable storage processors are an ideal fit with GDC's APEX and ATM switches. Together we offer customers the best performance and reliable business continuance solutions, as well as data sharing of heterogeneous systems without distance limitations. These combined capabilities are unique in the marketplace."
