France Telecom, Israel Vocaltec to talk

JERUSALEM, Nov 5 (Reuters) - France Telecom will hold talks in the next few days with Israel-based Vocaltec Communications and Comverse Technologies on possible joint ventures, Israel's Ha'aretz newspaper said on Friday.

France Telecom President Michel Bon plans to meet in Israel with executives from Vocaltec and Comverse to discuss investment and cooperation opportunities, Ha'aretz said, quoting unidentified sources involved in setting up the talks.

Officials at Vocaltec were not immediately available to comment.

Vocaltec is a pioneer in the field of Internet telephone systems. Comverse, which is based in New York but conducts much of its activities in Israel, develops and manufactures computers and telecommunications systems.

In April, Vocaltec was chosen by China to provide a package of software and services for a 14-city trial of Internet technology-based phone service.

France Telecom officials will also meet with Israel's Barak telecommunications firm, in which it has a stake, and with start-ups in a bid to identify new technologies to improve the French company's competitiveness in Europe, Ha'aretz said.
