I prefer paying a lot less for a PC with useful software than for a Mac without. After all, having control over both the OS and the hardware didn't exactly help the consumers of Apple. It's a lot more difficult maintaining an OS for a plethera of hardware manufacturers than for one. It's only recently gotten better for MS in that regard.
