I don't know if I agree with the notion of our needing greater publicity. Politicians respond to pressure of concentrated special interest groups not generalized interest. If the CCO story gets greater publicity it would generate two responses. The first would be civil libertarians, such as me, who would become outraged at the heavy handed actions of the state. The second would be ecology groups who would be opposed to drilling under any circumstances and would not be as concerned about civil liberty issues. The civil liberty issue, particularly in relationship to a corporation and its investors, is a generalized interest. It's unlikely that a bunch of p.o.ed libertarians are going to anything much beyond writing a few snippy letters. The ecology movement on the other hand is a very motivated and active special interest group. Politicians are more likely to respond to an active special interest than a more generalized feeling that intrusive government is bad. Greater publicity might delay a settlement and not work to our advantage.
