Thanks for the pointer.

This is a good overview article which I recommend for those interested in the current shape of the web server market. It certainly describes NSCP's challenges. I assume you'll agree that it is important to NSCP's future profitability (and shareholder value) that it maintain/gain market share in the web server marketplace? This is the key problem NSCP faces.

My company is an Internet Presence Provider (IPP) and we run Apache. We of course looked at NSCP but chose Apache for two key reasons:

1. Superior virtual domain hosting. Frankly, this feature alone precludes the use of NSCP. Running dozens of virtual domains with NSCP is prohibitively resource-intensive compared to Apache.

2, Price. Apache is very price-competitive. Keeping our costs low enables us to offer very competitive pricing to our customers.

We've also found Apache to be very reliable, running for months at a stretch without a glitch.

In this business no advantage is forever and we continually look at alternatives. But we're now looking at IIS since we want to deploy NT 4.0 Server as an adjunct to Linux.

Why IIS? Well, it's the "native" web server for NT and will probably better support FrontPage, which we believe will rapidly become the standard web authoring tool for most users. MSFT, by the way, will make a mint from FrontPage. Once again they are focusing on the development tools and have a real winner here.
