Well, if there was a message being sent, then it would be being sent to other potential informants. That suggests to me that the business deal or wrong doing that he was possibly going to testify about and that has the feature of having additional witnesses would be more a fertile direction to look.

It would also be sending a message to Kimberly too about what she might know about the identity of the killer(s).
