I heard Bill Joy speak at a lunch last week and he was pretty impressive. A bit loony, to be sure--obsessed with the potential for future bioterrorism, for example, in a way that struck me as a tiny bit hysterical (I do that kind of stuff professionally). But obviously very very smart and visionary. He made a great point about how both closed architectures and the open-source movement were bad, while proprietary open architectures were the best for all. I could only think to myself...QCOM! QCOM! QCOM! Actually, the only really disappointing thing for me was his apparent lack of understanding about CDMA. I mean, he kept talking about how wonderful it was that Europe had coalesced around the GSM standard, etc. etc. He didn't say much about e-commerce, though....but it wouldn't really have been appropriate in the setting...
