I don't think the dogs were home at the time. If Chalem and company were departing the following day for Tennessee, there would be last minute things to attend to. It takes time to take dogs to the kennel, check them in, etc. They probably had been taken earlier the day of the murder.
Would it be possible for someone in the NJ area to call the police and/or newspapers and inquire about the dogs?
