Monday November 8, 11:18 am Eastern Time Company Press Release IBM Launches Solution to Handle Massive Data Requirements of Life Sciences Industry NetGenics, Inc. to Partner in Deployment WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.--(BW HealthWire)--Nov. 8, 1999--IBM announced today the launch of DiscoveryLink(TM), a solution aimed at dramatically improving product cycle time while lowering development costs for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and agriscience companies.
DiscoveryLink, the first solution announced by IBM's newly formed life sciences organization, is a combination of innovative middleware and integration services. IBM's life sciences organization brings together all of IBM's resources, from commercial products to industry knowledge and research, to develop solutions for the life sciences market. IBM will team with NetGenics, Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio, in the deployment of the DiscoveryLink solution.
''Extracting information from multiple data sources used in the research and development of new drugs, gene therapies and plants has caused a critical bottleneck in the life sciences industry,'' said Daniel P. McCurdy, vice president, IBM life sciences. ''By combining our expertise in database and IT infrastructure with NetGenics' superior knowledge of industry applications, we can deliver a solution that we expect will dramatically impact the industry's productivity.''
IBM's DiscoveryLink solution will create a ''virtual database'' by permitting data to be accessed by an application program as if they were in a single database, and in a single format, even though they remain highly heterogeneous in format and highly decentralized.
''The IBM solution will address a core issue in life science research and development, which is the ability to perform complex queries -- queries not even possible today -- across heterogeneous data sources,'' said Manuel J. Glynias, president and CEO of NetGenics, Inc. ''We expect to add value to the DiscoveryLink implementation by applying our knowledge of and expertise in the life sciences industry to the deployment of DiscoveryLink.''
NetGenics will serve as a subcontractor to IBM in the deployment of the DiscoveryLink solution. After completion of testing, DiscoveryLink will be generally available to life sciences customers. Initial installation of DiscoveryLink is expected in coming weeks and will be generally available to the life sciences market in the first quarter 2000.
