History may repeat itself.
Texaco got hit for 11 billion in litigation, and it's stock is higher than ever. Exxon got hit for megabucks, and it is also flying. My family grows tobacco, and I own MO. Still, I do not rationalize. I would vote to outlaw the sale and use of tobacco for smoking or chewing or snuff if given the opportunity. People very near and dear to me have suffered and died and I am totally convinced that smoking was the cause. Some people simply cannot handle the addiction, will go into denial, will promise to quit in order to get relief from friends and family, and so on. The human is a complex life form, and fails to respond to logic as frequently as not. I own MO simply because I am a cynic, and I believe this company to be an outstanding investment vehicle. Why should we not take some of its profits to pay some of the bills of those who suffered and died?>>
Thanks for your post. Someone has to make money off of tobacco (IF there is money still left to be made in the stock) and you owning the stock is not causing any of the problems. If you didn't own the stock, someone else would, and the tobacco industry would be no less sinister. |
