GTE to Waive Some Net Installation Fees
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
IRVING, Tex. -- For the remainder of 1999, GTE will waive installation fees for high-speed Internet service for its customers in 17 states.
The telephone company said today that it expected the move will draw new customers to its digital subscriber line, or DSL, service. The fees vary widely, with some as high as $340, GTE said.
Business and residential customers who order DSL usually pay installation fees to their local phone company and Internet service provider.
GTE said its local phone-service customers who order the DSL service from one of 248 partner Internet service providers would not be charged for installation. In addition, the company said, its phone customers who order DSL through a subsidiary Internet service provider, GTE.net, will not be charged a one-time $50 Internet access fee.
GTE charges $49.95 or more a month to provide high-speed Internet service.
Roughly 60 percent of GTE's local phone customers live or work in areas where the service is available. |
